When the seaside community of Amity finds itself under attack by a dangerous great white shark, the town's chief of police (Roy Scheider), a young marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a grizzled shark hunter (Robert Shaw) embark on a desperate quest to destroy the beast before it strikes again. It sounds to be pretty much a whole new remix as sound effects during many of the action sequences do sound a little different. Extras have been ported over from previous Laserdisc and DVD special editions, and are presented in SD. The ocean scenes have had a rebalancing of the sky tone, lending it a more grey and flat colour as the director had originally intended.

The video displays sharp, distinct definition in the hair and clothing of the cast, revealing wrinkles and pores in the faces of actors. Once again, they could have gone overboard, but they stayed true to the original intent, keeping the film front-focussed for the most part, and really only using the surrounds to open up John Williams’ iconic score, and immerse you in the ambience of the film. The image looks a bit scrubbed, lacking the gritty haze of natural film grain consistent with films of the mid-1970s.surround sound, the JAWS Blu-ray Combo Pack with DVD, Digital Copy (compatible with iTunes®, iPad®, iPhone®, iPod touch, Android or online retail partners) and UltraViolet.

Show me the way to go home; I'm tired and I want to go to bed; well, I had a little drink about an hour ago and it's gone right to my head, no matter where I roam, through land or sea or foam; you will always hear me singing a song; show me the way to go home. The sound of the boat rocking during the USS Indianapolis speech, all the original audio is right there, but the surrounds get a great workout with the new audio, and it's absolutely memorizing. Quint helms the expedition to destroy the killer shark, but soon discovers a monster even deadlier than the nightmares of his past. All of the galleries are set up to allow you to scroll through each item or you can just let it play through on its own like a slideshow. The original mono recording is also given the restoration treatment and receives a massive upgrade with this DTS-HD Master Audio 7. Following the first shark attack on Amity Island, Police Chief Martin Brody is trapped between his pledge to protect the people by shutting down the beaches, and political pressure to protect tourist dollars. The first thing you're gonna notice about this absolutely fantastic DTS-HD Master audio track is that it's one of the few that is delivered exploiting the full range of the formats capabilities. I loved the movie and still consider it to be one of the most perfect movies ever made, great, mind blowing opening, and great pace, characters you care about, funny, frightening, and suspenseful with a great ending that makes you want to jump up and down on your chair and cheer.

It's hard to believe Spielberg would go on to become a director known for his tight, concise productions that stay on budget, and follow the storyboards to a tee. Black levels are true and often sumptuous in several areas with excellent delineation of the various gradations and small background objects hiding in the shadows. But where the piece gets more interesting is when it moves away from the making of the film and looks at everything around it, like the book The Jaws Log, the making-of documentary that was made for the laserdisc, the marketing, and the huge fan base. The film doesn't exactly illustrate a particular style that's uniquely his — that's to come years later with ' Raiders of the Lost Ark' and ' E. Spielberg, too, comes from a film-school background and approach, although his career took off before he actually completed his education. I would like to say thank-you to all the people involved in the making of this movie and to those responsible for bringing it on to Blu Ray because even when we first watched it on video and DVD we all knew the makers were going to need a bigger boat to do this movie justice. Sadly, this segment informed me how the Orca, the famous ship, was eventually chopped up for timbre.

The negatives were in pretty bad shape, and the process was painstaking, often interpolating two frames to remove horrific artefacts and blemishes that ran top to bottom across several frames, but the resto-artists have done a bang up job. While there's probably very few fans who would want to see a CG'ed version of Jaws, it would have been wonderful to see this test footage in some kind of a featurette -- something that would also reiterate Spielberg's firm anti-tinkering stance. That degree of restoration can raise questions of about how far studios should go in rejuvenating classics, especially when it comes to colour timing. Most of it is not of much concern though there is an intriguing scene with Quint and a scene involving the mob hunt for the shark. They have given the soundtrack a new lease of life, and it's as heart-stoppingly frightening as it ever was. For those fearing a real botched job from Universal, who has a tendency to “over clean” their transfers for catalogue titles, they can put those fears mostly to rest.
