About this deal

In solo mode, I’ve been averaging 40 minutes for each session, but once one gets used to the game I’d say 30 minutes is the average.

Tha probbly ment tha heid bummer, Mr McPherson wiz toap man fir five minits in his hoose, so he goat the remote fir the telly, and was given the extra crunchy bit off the fish supper oan friday.

As someone who likes to play Clever and Welcome To with his girlfriend, you might find it surprising to hear this is actually the first game in this genre that I have played solo – but gosh darn it do I like it! The second box is for the second scoring criteria and the third box is for the total amount of coins you have colored in thus far. While this can be an issue, and while the lack of physical pieces does remove some tactility from the game, it also opens up unexpected design space.

Myself and Luke go through the list of games that have turned our heads and made us into chuckling muppets. The Dragul contest your claims with their outposts, so you must draw your lines carefully to reduce their influence.Well, in the same way as the original, you flip over explore cards with terrain types and a shape (or two) to draw onto your map. The number of players is limited only by the number of available score sheets; each box includes 100. Consider this example: The numbered spaces are not filled in and will cost this player 9 points during end-of-round scoring. All of these decisions are good trade-offs, and there is rarely a "right" answer, at least when the game begins. I keep these banded front-to-front with the base cards, and I randomly choose a deck before each game.

Ah well, don’t worry about that now – if you come back in one piece, Queen Gimnax might just bestow her eternal gratitude upon you! If they can’t overlap a Ruins space, or there are none left, then they must draw a 1×1 square with any terrain type anywhere on the map. Sure, a real mapmaker doesn’t get to place environmental objects however they like; but a) I’m playing a game and b) I’m a fantasy world mapmaker! However, it is not too punishing, you don’t feel like you are being attacked as such as nothing is being taken away from you.

I’m a lousy artist and drawing something that would look recognizable in that small a space would take way too much time, so I try to get by with abbreviations for the different terrain types, which usually confuse my opponents and sometimes myself. There is an ambush pack promo available for the game, and while I usually don't like promos, this is a perfect way to expand the types and shapes of monsters available for the game.

If there is ever a scenario where that shape is impossible to fit onto your map, players either choose the alternative shape on the Explore card or must draw a 1×1 square. Across the grid are ruins and mountains and possible a massive canyon, depending on the difficulty chosen. You try to strategize your game plan up front based on the goal cards, but in the end you need to make tactical decisions based on what terrain cards come out. But here's the thing: they add enough complexity to the game and don't repay that complexity enough that I will almost never use them outside of solo play. The main new thing that Heroes adds is the eponymous hero cards--new cards that can destroy monsters on the map and protect spaces from monsters.
