There are so many unimportant aspects to this story that completely ruined it for me and I couldn’t focus on the plot or the storyline because the lack of development and the lack of character growth is astounding.

Excluding the first and final chapters, the entire book alternates between Grey and Lia Mara’s perspectives, which causes the story to feel lopsided and biased. So I knew he would get a brand new LI in this one before I got into it, and at first I was on board with that idea as well. He reminds me of Geralt from The Witcher because he's very stoic and contained but sharp and tactful when he needs to be.I personally saw Lia Mara as having brown skin but it’s hard to believe because her whole family had creamy pale skin.

While it’s understandable for her to deal with insecurities considering her upbringing, I think the book would have been better off with a more assertive female protagonist to balance out Grey, otherwise this book ends up with two passive leads that don’t really have tension or challenge each other. after these unfortunate and unwanted changes, i had to read this book as if it were completely unconnected to ACSDAL and essentially a standalone. I could picture each one of them and though they start out as strangers and foes, the travelers become united and even friends. Also, what Lia Mara does to her mother at the end of the book is rather glossed over and made to seem like not that big of a deal (but it definitely is a big deal). The story could have used a little more of her, or at least of the brave, stunning girl we got to know in book one.

All of the groundwork that was laid in the first book to show how much he cares about his people has gone out the window in this book. You don't always need to go on for pages to get your point across in a meaningful and beautiful manner, you will not find paragraphs of descriptions of those 3 bushes by the river in this book! Harper was my favorite part of A Curse So Dark and Lonely, but she is hardly featured in A Heart So Fierce and Broken, having been swept to the sidelines in favor of Grey and Lia Mara.
